M3.1: Biomonitoring
Upon watching "Body Burdens" with Anderson Cooper, I was shocked (again) at how drastically the environment can influence our bodies. The health hazards and toxic levels of chemicals that build up are troubling. It is especially worrisome because the children mentioned in the video had extremely high levels compared to their parents. In particular, the flame retardant, or PBDE levels, were much higher. Chemical exposure happens in multiple ways, not just through the foods we eat or what we drink.
If I were to receive the lab results presented, I would first wonder where and how I was exposed. I would want to know how to reduce my exposure, and I would want to know how to prevent further exposure in the future for me and my loved ones. As we know, exposure to these chemicals can come from anywhere - products we use, things we eat or drink, places we live. In addition to this, I would feel upset. As the video stated, manufacturers are not required to test new chemicals on products. As we gain more and more information regarding the detrimental effects of various chemicals, it is clear that this is something that needs to be changed. While I learn more on this topic, I realize the importance of becoming educated, being conscious, and becoming involved. It is ultimately my responsibility to be aware of what products I use, my diet, my living space, and my lifestyle. However, as a healthcare provider, I also feel an inclination to educate others in order to work towards a safer and healthier future. Awareness, although a simple step, can still be a significant one.

Hi Loren,
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to find out what we have been exposed to thus far, but more importantly, where we were exposed to such chemicals and what the exposure has done to our health thus far. Awareness is key in changing our behavior and the behavior of others. When we continue to be blinded, we are never able to change.
