M4.6: Radon

How would you develop a national awareness campaign? Name some of your potential collaborators (stakeholders).

When developing awareness of radon, I would promote education in various areas, if I had the funds and means to do so. There are multiple ways to expose people to information. Brochures, pamphlets, and posters are always a good way to reach people. These paper resources can go in a variety of places such as stores, doctor's offices/clinics, or even a cork board in a coffee shop. While not everyone pays attention to the things that they see when they go out to shop or do errands, most of the world is connected through the Internet, their phone, or some other piece of technology. For a national awareness campaign, I would utilize this platform as much as possible. A commercial would be good for people who watch television. For those who don't actually watch television, but use sites like Hulu, a short educational clip could be shown right before they watch their show. A public service announcement could be made on the radio to reach those who commute during the day. The more people are aware and the more they are encouraged to take precautions, the more likely they are to do something. Smoking is well-known to be the number one cause for lung cancer, but radon - the second cause - is unknown to many people. It's imperative to spread awareness so people can take precautions. All of the components of the campaign would first educate and then provide resources, as the YouTube video did.

Potential collaborators would include the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state radon offices, departments of public health, political and/or local leaders, and healthcare leaders in the area.

  1. Hey Loren,

I think it is wise to educate and then provide resources to individuals. I know that Hulu has commercials between shows so offering a short commercial just informing people what radon is would be a great idea. The more media outlets used, the better as it has higher potential to reach a large number of people.

  2. I think it is great that you included Hulu and online media. I think that is where you can reach the most people. Radon as a second cause was surprising to me as well.
